The VIN is STAMPED directly into the pan.
It's not on a plate.
The plate and the smaller one on the dash on post 67 cars were both secondary marks as both are easily swapped.
The primary marking is the one stamped directly on the pan.

What systems are on there?
Yeah, but the intake manifold picks up heat from the exhaust to warm up faster and run better and prevent intake icing.

Don't care about running a heater

WTF are J-tubes?

How do these header style exhausts work with no heaters, and what are the extra pipe fittings on the intake manifold?

Looks like the doghouse has two hoses that go through a gravel shield that would make up the bottom of the engine compartment in a car with one.

Looks like heater tubes go under back seat and also through the body, then I to the trunk and up under the dash... A windshield defroster would be nice, but I don't want any additional heat coming into the passenger compartment.

I've never seen anything like this up close, there is quite a learning curve

The stamped VIN and the tag in the trunk match each other, there wasn't a dash VIN plate

You might get some paperwork from the DMV, probably not. Most likely you can ignore it.

My best friend (who passed away in 2009) and I pulled the body off the pan.
I borrowed my neighbors mig welder, cut out the drivers side (I think) rear pan section and welded in a repair panel.
While the body was off, we hooked up a steering wheel and drove the flat pan around the paddocks out back.
I think it pops out of 2nd gear, but the rest of the trans was fine.
After that, we put the body back on and parked it right where you picked it up from.
I didn't notice a patch, but I haven't gotten that far into it. I still haven't gotten all the crud and silt out of the cabin yet. Still a bit of water sitting in the pan, just hasn't been warm and dry enough to fully dry.

I never could get that drivers side hinge working, the hinge and hinge screw plate were too rusted, so I ordered a patch panel and screws, and hinge pin. Hoping to save the hinge, we'll see

No, I don't think I'll have a problem with intake icing in so-cal... But ripping all the **** of a finely crafted German piece of equipment sounds like a good way to end up with the thing running like ****, and me not knowing why
